History of Big Buddha Beach

The Airport
Samui airport was built in 1983 and eventually opened in 1989. A sum of 1,000 Million baht was invested in the construction and the development of more than 500 rai of land.

This airport has got to be seen to be believed.......a beautiful way to arrive on a tropical island. The airport has won several awards lately for it's efficiency, style and it's environmental awareness, and is more like a tropical garden than an airport.


The Boeing 717-200
 The runway is 2,100 meters long and the company, Bangkok Airways have just introduced a small jet service on International flights and on some Bangkok - Samui flights.
The airline have just taken delivery of their 2nd jet and besides the two Boeing 717-200s, the Bangkok Airways' aircraft fleet also comprises of nine 70-seater ATR twin turbo prop airplanes.
The airline's route network includes such popular destinations as Sukhothai, Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Chiang Mai, and Singapore, among others. You can find the Bangkok Airways website here.

The Samui Airport Grounds
 There are also rumors that Thai Airways are about to be allowed to fly to Samui as well thus increasing seat availability, which are in great demand. Incidentally, when you arrive at Samui Airport you may take the Bangkok Airways Limousine for only 30 Baht per person to any Bungalow resort on this beach. Their desk is located next to Terminal 1 Baggage claim. By the way, if there were such a thing as 'noiseless planes', we've got them. You never hear the planes from the beach.
