History of Big Buddha Beach
The Mines
The Big Buddha Beach stretches for more than two Kilometers
from the foot of the giant 15 meter high Buddha himself
to the Bophut end of the beach, where the mine used to be.
This mine was worked for many years to bring tungsten to
the surface. This ceased in 1977 when there was a bad accident
and 6 miners were killed and another seriously injured.
Many of the local people refuse to go near it now as they
claim it is haunted by those lost souls. This operation
was fairly low scale, and did not scar the landscape. It
hardly compared to the other local occupations of Fishing
and Coconut farming in terms of income.
